It’s fine. Just not super.
Reporting in from the Melbourne IMAX premiere — Superman (2025) looks and sounds amazing on the biggest screen in town. It’s polished, punchy, and has moments of pure comic-book joy. But story-wise? It’s just… fine. Not thrilling, not terrible — just comfortably sitting in the middle of the road with its cape gently flapping in the breeze.
This isn’t a film that will reignite the DCU in one bold swoop, but it might just be enough to light a slow burn.
Lois and Clark? We’re in. Their chemistry is there, it sparkles in all the right places. Superman’s adoptive parents are also a total delight — sweet, grounded, and warm in a way we haven’t seen in a while.
The new Superman himself is a different flavour to Cavill’s brooding god-tier presence — but is he better? He’s more human, more comic book-y. But whether he’ll become iconic is still up in the air.
On the flip side: the humour doesn’t always land. Some of it (hello superdog bits) will get a chuckle, but there’s tonal whiplash when things lean too goofy. This version of Superman may fly, but sometimes he feels a little too cartoonish for a character with this much weight behind him.
Here’s the big issue: the plot just doesn’t soar. Stakes are low. Danger feels soft. And for all its colourful charm, there’s no real “holy shit” moment — no unforgettable action, twist, or triumph. It’s not bad storytelling… it’s just safe.
Out of all the Superman stories to tell, they chose one that barely gets off the ground
Look — I wanted to love this. I grew up watching the old Superman movies on repeat, wide-eyed and in awe. They weren’t just superhero flicks — they were magic. They made me believe. And yeah, maybe that’s childhood nostalgia talking, but it’s a feeling I was really hoping to chase again here.
This film doesn’t quite get there. It’s good. It’s competent. But it’s missing that spark — the sense of wonder that made Superman more than just a guy in a cape.
✅ Strong Lois & Clark chemistry
✅ Beautifully shot, IMAX-worthy scale
❌ Lackluster story
❌ Weak sense of stakes
❌ Some tonal whiplash with the comedy
It’s not the bold reinvention I was hoping for, but it’s no misfire either. Superman is charming in parts, visually slick, and gives us a solid take on the Man of Steel — just don’t expect to leave the cinema feeling like you’ve seen something truly super.
