Together Review

Love’s messy. This one’s messier.

Not into gore? Not usually your jam? Same here. But Together might just win you over — or at least make you wince with respect.

Directed by Australian newcomer Michael Shanks, Together is a bold-as-hell feature debut that mashes up body horror with some rom-not-so-much-com, angst. Sounds chaotic? It is — but in mostly the best ways.

Brie and Franco stick the landing

Real-life couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco star as Millie and Tim — a pair stuck in a relationship that’s, well… a bit too close for comfort. Their performances carry the whole freaky metaphor on their very tense shoulders, and they’re great. They both get to go weird and raw, which is always fun to watch.

It’s like The Fly meets Marriage Story, but with more tentacles and less Oscar bait.

Michael Shanks: from YouTube to WTF

You might know Michael Shanks from his work on The Wizards of Aus or his cult YouTube channel Timtimfed — now he’s made the leap to features, and wow, did he bring the practical effects with him. According to his interview with Variety, the story is drawn from his own long-term relationship. That explains the gross intimacy and raw emotional chaos. It’s a love letter soaked in blood and slime.

The last act? Bit of a squelch

Like a lot of body horror flicks, Together struggles to stick the landing. A late-game pivot deflates the tension a bit. You’re left with a great premise that maybe didn’t need a tidy bow — just more guts (literally and emotionally).

Pretty Damn Solid, mostly

✅ Alison and Dave
✅ Effects that make your skin crawl
✅ Director Michael Shanks swings big - and mostly hits

❌ Troubled ending

Is Together worth watching?

Together doesn’t care if you’re comfortable. It wants you squirming — physically, emotionally, maybe existentially. And for the most part, it pulls that off. With committed performances and a bold directorial debut from Michael Shanks, this is a messy, visceral relationship horror that leaves a mark — even if it smears a bit on the way out.

Final Score: ⭐⭐⭐✨ - Raw, weird, and worth a look
